You’ve heard of fly fishing, but how about fish flying?
“The Little Mermaid” in Tustin’s Peppertree Park features saltwater creatures “swimming” through the sea – or, rather, gliding high above the stage in front of an ocean-view backdrop.
On Monday evening, Aug. 6, elaborately costumed actors practiced their roles at the dress rehearsal for this summer’s Broadway in the Park production. The real thing debuted Tuesday night and continues through Saturday, Aug. 11.
Tustin Area Council for Fine Arts sponsors the annual event, which transforms the Old Town park into an outdoor amphitheater.
Flying effects company ZFX provides the magic. Hidden harnesses and almost invisible cables allow cast members to zip through the air, in a swishing motion that makes them appear to be swimming.
Disney’s “Little Mermaid,” based on a Hans Christian Andersen story, includes a host of well-known characters: King Triton, evil Ursula, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, Sebastian the crab and, of course, Ariel the mermaid.
The musical starts at 7:45 p.m. every night through Saturday, at Peppertree Park, 230 W First St. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $30 for reserved seating. Children four and under are free.
